{"id":586,"date":"2021-09-03T22:49:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-03T21:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.avtuae.com\/en\/?p=586"},"modified":"2021-09-17T23:00:32","modified_gmt":"2021-09-17T22:00:32","slug":"african-migrant-workers-brutalised-in-uae-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.avtuae.com\/en\/?p=586","title":{"rendered":"African migrant workers brutalised in UAE &#8211; report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hundreds of African workers in the United Arab Emirates have been brutalised, thrown into jail and then deported,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/impactpolicies.org\/en\/news\/235\">researchers from two NGOs have found<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a new report, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor and Impact International for Human Rights Policies detail how the migrants were arrested en masse in June and then subjected to brutal treatment while in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They took us straight to prison, not even a police station,&#8221; Ugandan Kennedy Rubangakene told BBC Focus on Africa TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was surprised because I did not know why I was there&#8230; I had the legal documents. My contract had just been renewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There was no offence that I was charged with. They did not even take me to court.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mofaic.gov.ae\/en\/mediahub\/news\/2021\/9\/3\/03-09-2021-uae-accuracy\">The authorities in the UAE said the arrests were legal<\/a>&nbsp;and aimed at &#8220;prostitution networks [which] were involved in human trafficking offences, indecent acts, and extortion&#8221; adding that &#8220;those arrested were found to be involved in these crimes&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers spoke to more than 100 of those affected, mostly from Uganda, Cameroon and Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They had valid paperwork and were employed in a variety of roles including cleaners, waiters, nurses and electricians, the report says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;attacks were planned, targeted and racially motivated&#8221;, Michela Pugliese from Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor alleged on the BBC&#8217;s Focus on Africa programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also detailed how privileges among workers in the UAE vary according to ethnic origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, the UAE government &#8220;categorically denied the report&#8217;s racist suggestions, stressing that the [country] adopts strict laws and practices with regards to non-discrimination in all cases&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/world-africa-47639452?ns_mchannel=social&#038;ns_source=twitter&#038;ns_campaign=bbc_live&#038;ns_linkname=61323393b19a573a6ec39207%26African%20migrant%20workers%20brutalised%20in%20UAE%20-%20report%262021-09-03T15%3A15%3A33.294Z&#038;ns_fee=0&#038;pinned_post_locator=urn:asset:4c5b8932-1ef6-4bf3-ad47-bc2459188962&#038;pinned_post_asset_id=61323393b19a573a6ec39207&#038;pinned_post_type=share\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of African workers in the United Arab Emirates have been brutalised, thrown into jail and then deported,&nbsp;researchers from two NGOs have found.
